The Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a criminal gang known for carrying out armed robberies on rural banks in different parts of the country.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, announced the development at a press briefing held on Wednesday, September 24, 2024, at the National Police Headquarters in Accra. He described the achievement as a “major breakthrough” in the fight against organized robbery groups.
Dr. Yohuno explained that over the past year, the police had noticed a troubling rise in attacks on rural financial institutions. Investigations revealed striking similarities in the way the robberies were executed, suggesting that a well-coordinated syndicate was behind the crimes.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that through careful analysis, surveillance, and intelligence from trusted sources, we have successfully tracked down this syndicate,” he told journalists, officers, and dignitaries gathered at the event.
The operation covered five regions—Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti—and took place in communities including Esereso Adagya, EjisuAchiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Ahwia-Zongo, Aputuogya-Abuontem, Kaase-BOST, Asuofua, Atonsu-Monaco, Pakyi, Obuasi, and Buoho near Kronum.
In the course of the raids, 10 suspects were arrested while three others were killed during a shootout with police. The IGP disclosed that a manhunt is underway to capture the remaining gang members still at large.
“We are determined to bring every one of them to justice,” he assured.
Items seized during the operation included:
- 14 weapons (comprising AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, pistols, and a single-barreled gun)
- Ammunition
- Several vehicles
- Mobile phones
Dr. Yohuno praised the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his intelligence team for their significant role in the operation. He also acknowledged the dedication of all officers involved, as well as the contributions of civilians who shared vital information.
“I sincerely thank members of the public who came forward with credible intelligence, which was crucial to this success,” he said, adding that the Service remains committed to rewarding useful information that aids investigations.
The IGP ended with a strong message to criminal elements, vowing that the police will continue to intensify their pursuit until such groups are completely dismantled.
“We will make life unbearable for criminals in our society until they are held accountable,” he warned.
